Myanmar: Bagan

Bagan is just 193 km south of Mandalay and it is definitely the most important and extraordinary religious city in Souteast Asia. Bagan is one of the main tourist destinations in Myanmar and tt is notable for its immense area of land coverage and the number and size of its temples. The size of the Bagan area is about 36 sqkm. Bagan entered its golden age in 1057 A.D. From this time more than 13.000 temples, pagodas and other religous structures were built. Today, seven centuries later "only" 2.217 remain standing. The others were washed by the near Ayeyarwady river or earthquakes have taken their toll.
